About Operation Tabletop

  • Our mission is to prevent Veteran suicide by fostering connections through tabletop games. We are committed to creating an environment where every Veteran can find hope, support, and a sense of belonging.

  • While there are many clinical services dedicated to treating Veterans, preventing suicide requires both a clinical and community-based approach. Community level involvement is crucial because many Veterans are cynical towards mental health services due to past experiences. We believe camaraderie, laughing and having fun over boardgames can be an alternative or a steppingstone for those who are hesitant to seek therapy.

Our goal is to create a space, or set the table if you will, for Veterans to connect and build relationships to recreate the camaraderie they enjoyed during their service.

We align our efforts in support of the VA’s Nation Strategy for Preventing Veteran Suicide. We are here to provide peer support and link Veterans in crisis with the appropriate services to treat PTSD, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.

  • Games facilitate, encourage, and strengthen social connections.

The inherent social nature of tabletop gaming, online or in-person, provides a non-threatening and enjoyable avenue for current and former service members to connect. Operation Tabletop provides a space to share experiences, build new friendships, strengthen relationships, and build lasting social networks. Our online communities create far-reaching networks of support that combat isolation and loneliness.

    Games increase trust and communication.

Games require players to communicate and collaborate with each other. Collaboration can help break down communication barriers and create a safe space to discuss shared challenges in life as well as the game. Players build trust and empathy with each other as they work towards a common goal.

    Games promote mindfulness.

Games often require players to be fully present in the moment. To succeed, individuals need to concentrate on the game's dynamics. Focusing on the game instead of current worries and anxieties becomes a mindfulness exercise that promotes relaxation and reduces stress levels. It can also help improve attention span, which reduces mental distractions and impulsivity.

Games increase life skills and resiliency.

Games challenge the mind. They often require strategic thinking, problem-solving, critical reasoning, and creativity. Such mental engagement helps to keep the brain active and sharp, even potentially lowering the risk of cognitive decline. Role-playing games encourage players to use their creativity and imagination. This allows individuals to leave their current experiences behind while they explore new worlds, characters, and scenarios. This escapism can be therapeutic and provide an outlet for self-expression. Tabletop games also often involve challenges, setbacks, and triumphs. Learning to cope with defeat and celebrate victories in a controlled, low-stakes environment can help individuals build emotional resilience and develop healthy coping mechanisms.

    Games are inclusive.

Gaming is an inclusive activity that can be enjoyed by current or former service members of all races, genders, ages, abilities, and service backgrounds. This inclusivity allows people to connect with others they might not otherwise have the opportunity to meet and can help break down stereotypes and promote acceptance and understanding.
